The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a land-locked country in Western Europe bordered by Belgium, France and Germany. Luxembourg has an average population density of 148 inhabitants per km2 and over 30% of its population are foreigners. Although the country's population is predominantly of French, German and Belgian origin, two other population groups, namely the Portuguese and Italians, account for a quite significant minority of the population.
One of the key contributors to the developed market economy is the heavy industries, particularly steel, as Luxembourg is one of the world's foremost steel producers. It is also one of the most prominent international financial centres and banking is a very important sector for the economy.
In the thrust towards a more diversified economy, particularly with regards to industry, industrial production in Luxembourg stems from a range of sectors including: plastic and synthetic materials, mechanics and machine construction, transformation of ferrous and non ferrous metals, precision instruments, electronics supply. Industry exports amount to more than 80% of total production and 85% of which are destined for EU countries.
Luxembourg is a representative democracy and constitutional monarchy. Executive power lies within the Grand Duke and is exercised by the different members of the government under the authority of the Prime Minister. The nation is represented by the Chamber of Deputies whose members are elected directly by the people.
